Hello to everyone in Bracknell Forest.

As Christmas approaches ever faster now, I know that many may be worried about how they can be sustainable over a period often marked by excess. If this applies to you, then take a look at the council’s social media channels. We’ll be posting some top tips on how you can have a more sustainable Christmas this year. You may even save a little bit of money in the process, which would be most welcome during the current cost-of-living crisis.

Today marks the penultimate day of National Grief Awareness Week. It is a very human experience, but perhaps one we don’t talk about enough. It is something that we all sadly live through at some point in our lives and it is, unfortunately, something that is often triggered during the festive season.

Getting through grief is in many ways a two-way process. I would encourage anyone suffering to reach out for help, but also, if you know someone who may be struggling, please check in on them and let them know you are there for them. Reaching out and doing something simple, like going for a walk, can, in extreme circumstances, be a lifesaver. This time of year can be very lonely for some, so it’s even more important that we all check in on one another.

Certainly, my thoughts turn to the people of Ukraine. We have seen a steady flow of guests arriving in the borough since March and they have become an integral part of the community. One of the highlights of my year was attending the opening of the Vsi Razom Community Hub in Princess Square, and the work that founders Ashleigh and Natalia have done since has never failed to amaze me. The truth is, many Ukrainians will be spending Christmas away from Ukraine and family members; that was unthinkable to them less than a year ago.

Bracknell Forest residents have done an incredible job as hosts, but, with the conflict ongoing, any further support is welcome and much needed. The families who have hosted have, in the vast majority of cases, extended their tenure, but we always need more. If you’re interested in hosting, or wish to find out more, you can visit our website, or email: ukraine@bracknell-forest.gov.uk.

Finally, well done to England for reaching the quarter finals of the World Cup. Is it too early to start dreaming? By the time I next write to you, they will either be out or have made the semi-finals.

Whoever you are supporting, enjoy the action and have a lovely week ahead.
