Reading grabbed a stoppage time winner over Hull City to go into the World Cup break with a 2-1 win.

Here is every word from Royals boss Paul Ince.

Ince on the late goal

The timing was great. I’m not saying we deserved it. It was a tough game to come to, with a new manager at home.

Ince on Liam Rosenior

First and foremost, I want to congfratulate him on getting the job. It’s great to see a young, black English manager get the chance to manage at this level. My first job was at Macclesfield, bottom of League Two, while other managers were getting higher up, so to see someone like Liam in a position where he’s young and learning but getting the opportunity to manage this fantastic club and learn to grow. That’s pleasing for me personally. He’ll be a very good coach; his football was good at times, and he’ll get better. Unfortunately, I’ve come and taken the points away from him but it’s a tough league.

Ince on the game

You always thought it was going to be a 1-1 draw. They put a bit of pressure on us in the last 10 minutes, but we stood fast, got the free kick. It was a great header from AC [Andy Carroll] and it goes in the back of the net. You don’t like that to happen to any team, but fortunately we got it on the right time in the right minute. We didn’t deserve to get three points, a point would have been fair for both teams, but when you look at how we were robbed against Burnley and having that four-hour drive back, now we have a four-and-a-half-hour journey back which is a lot more pleasant. It was three points that we needed, and the timing was fantastic.

Ince on conceding early

We do concede goals from set-pieces, but you’ve got to remember there’s no Naby [Sarr], no Liam Moore, no Hutch, no Tom McIntyre. They’re four proper defenders. We’ve got five or six players out today. They will fight for you. Watford last week, we went 1-0 down from a penalty and you think you’ll lose by four, but you dig in and fight. We put pressure on them down the right-hand side and destroyed them. That final ball wasn’t clinical enough. When we got the equaliser, it was thoroughly deserved, and a case of next goal wins it. The longer it was going on I thought I’d take a point but don’t concede in the last minute. It was pleasing for everyone, especially the fans. It was a long journey, for once we can go back with a smile on our faces.

Ince on the impact of a win

It means you haven’t got to spend the next month being negative and thinking about how to change it. We hadn’t won in seven or eight games, so it takes the monkey off of your back. The lads are going away, so it’s nice to have the positive feeling. We’ve been on this up and down road so it’s nice to get this feeling going on holiday. By December 10 we will have Naby back, Sarr back, Hutch back, Lumley back, so we will be stronger defensively, that’s for sure.

Ince on World Cup stars

I’m pleased for the likes of Junior, Mamadou and Baba, coming through the game unscathed. Even as a manager, you think on Sunday they’re on the plane to a World Cup. I’ve experienced what a World Cup is, it’s the most amazing feeling in the world, so I’m hoping they don’t get injured but still play the way they should. They did, they did all the stuff right they needed to do. We’ve seen so many injuries with players missing out in the last minute, it’s devastating, I’m glad my three players are injury-free and can go and enjoy the experience in Qatar.

Ince on Sam Hutchinson

He's done his calf again. We were only going to play him 60 minutes in Watford but knowing Hutch he wants to play. He will be out for two to three weeks. This is why this break couldn’t have come quicker for us. If we’d have gone through the whole season how we are, we would struggle to stay in this league. We’ve got four weeks to get the boys back. We just hope that when they come back, they stay back and don’t keep falling out. It’s been frustrating but we’ve had five or six first team players who would’ve played today that haven’t so that says a lot about the players who played today.

Ince on striker battle

Today worked out well. Shane hasn’t played in about seven weeks, but we knew with how Hull want to play we needed to press from the front. That’s when you need Yakou or Shane- that’s not AC or Joao’s game. They were very good at that and gave us the energy at the front. It’s going to be horses for courses. Yak got us another goal today. Eventually, as a striker you want to say you’re the main man. We’ve got four very good strikers, but someone has to grab that. That’s up to them. They’re different strikers in different ways. I’m pleased they came on and made an impact. Sometimes you make a sub and they struggled to get up to speed. It’s for them to fight. I always played a 4231, that’s my preferred formation, so it will be different personnel. It’s nice to have a choice.
