Lower Earley Library is collecting donations of toys and toiletries to help those most affected by the cost-of-living crisis.

Working alongside Berkshire Hygiene Bank – a community-based charity which aims to tackle hygiene poverty – the library is setting up donation points to provide for those in need.

For many low-income households, essential products that most people take for granted, like shampoo, deodorant or period products, have become “out of reach luxuries”.

Those happy to donate these products can do so by dropping them into the library’s yellow bins, with Wokingham and Woodley set to follow suit in the coming weeks.

Another donation point that will be made available in the library throughout November is on behalf of Reading Family Aid Toys and Teens Appeal – where good quality toys and other items are sent to disadvantaged children and teens in the wider Reading area, including Wokingham.

As well as toys, the charity is collecting for the NHS Christmas Gift Giving Tree, which provides gifts for patients who are lonely and in hospital over Christmas.

The library is also selling Cards for Good Causes charity Christmas cards. They are already available to purchase, using cash only, and will be until Christmas Eve.
