Reading Head of Football Operations, Mark Bowen, revealed that some of the club's summer signings have clauses which could see them leave the club in January.

Former manager Bowen arrived in May to oversee the operations of the football club, and is a key member of the recruitment team alongside Brian Carey and first team manager Paul Ince.

With over 10 first team exits last summer, 13 first team regulars arrived over the summer; all on loans and free deals.

Starting the season better than expected, the Royals sit in the top 10 after 15 matches.

Speaking to ElmParkRoyals' podcast, Bowen revealed that many of the recent additions could move on as soon as after Christmas if a better deal comes along.

"We can’t hide from the fact that we’ve brought players in on contractual promises and verbal promises to come in and give it your best for us," he started. "We know we can’t give you this or that, what you might expect somewhere else, but saying to them: you can train every day, look at our lovely stadium, we’ve got a manager that can relate to you.

"We’ve had to give some players guarantees that in January, if they feel something better comes up, they’re gone. It’s not ideal but it was massively important that before the season started, we got a really competitive squad in for now, and if it brings problems in January and the end of the season, then that’s what it’s got to be. We’ll have to take that on the chin and work around it."

One such incoming was Baba Rahman, who also spent last season on loan in Berkshire.

The full-back is likely to go to next month's World Cup with Ghana, and the former Wales international has hinted that a strong performance in Qatar could change the situation with the 28-year-old.

"Baba is one of those players that you mentioned earlier on about moving on in January," he said. "If things happen in a different way then Baba has the opportunity to go somewhere else. It’s something we have to go to there and then."
