A new mum from Reading was left “traumatised” when her baby began vomiting after consuming lumpy Cow & Gate baby milk, she said.

Aisha Ashraf, 28, bought bottles of the brand’s First Infant Milk from Tesco, Asda and Costco in the week ending October 2, all of which she claimed were curdled and smelt off, despite being opened before their expiry dates.

Cow & Gate apologised for a “quality issue” that resulted in batches of the drink looking lumpy, but strongly denied that this posed any safety risk.

“I want other parents to be careful because it is such a sensitive thing, new-born babies, and when you place your trust in Cow & Gate which has been there for years and you see errors like this, it’s really scary,” said Mrs Ashraf.

“I don’t want anyone else to suffer what I went through at 1am in the morning.

“I am literally tearing up now thinking about what I went through.”

Mrs Ashraf said discovered the baby milk was lumpy while feeding her daughter at the end of September, but assumed it was a problem with one bottle from Tesco.

After finding lumps in another one litre bottle from Asda, Mrs Ashraf bought a bulk package of smaller Cow & Gate baby milk instead. But when she came to feed her baby on October 2, the product was also lumpy and smelt off, she said.

“It was 1am in the morning when my baby wanted her next feed so I opened the new bulk [pack] and it was curdled and it smelt and I was just in tears, my baby was screaming, and I had literally no way to feed her.

“If my mum were not with me I would have totally broken down – seeing my little nine-week-old cry from hunger.”

She said: “Ignoring the financial aspect, the stress that me, my baby and the family went through that night was extremely traumatising.”

Her husband rang the maternity ward at Royal Berkshire Hospital who offered her six bottles of baby milk.

A spokesperson for Cow & Gate said apologised to Mrs Ashraf for the lumps, but said the milk passed rigorous safety testing.

“We are very sorry that Ms Ashraf has on this occasion experienced products that have not met our usual high quality and standards.  We are in touch with Ms Ashraf to resolve the matter for her and make sure she is not out of pocket from the experience.

“We are aware of a quality issue on a limited number of batches of ready to drink Cow & Gate milk. This has resulted in white particles in the milk and the milk looking lumpy.

“All our products are tested against our rigorous safety standards. We can confirm there is no safety risk from consuming these batches of milk.

“Once we became aware of the quality issue, we took steps to stop sending the remaining product from these batches to retailers.

“Once again, we are very sorry for the stress and inconvenience that Ms Ashraf has incurred.”
