An ex-primary school teacher from Reading has been arrested this week after ‘gluing herself to the road’ in support of the Just Stop Oil protest.

On Friday, October 7, 25 supporters of the climate change group walked onto the road and blocked traffic near Vauxhall Bridge.

The 66-year-old is among two Berkshire residents who were arrested when demanding that the Government commits to ending all new oil and gas projects in the UK.

Helen Sheldrake, 66, retired primary school teacher from Reading said “I’m doing this because the government has no interest in addressing the climate crisis which is destroying homes, crops and wildlife all over the world.

“They are focused on supporting the billionaires and fossil fuel companies that fund them rather than protecting our children and everything we care about.

“We can’t go on like this - extreme weather events like our 40-degree summer and the terrible floods in Pakistan are just going to get worse if we don’t reduce our emissions and invest properly in renewables, insulation and public transport.”

The Government have organised the launch of a new round of oil and gas licencing this month where 130 new licences for gas and oil projects are likely to be rewarded.

Protects and blockages in London that were formed by the two groups of ‘Just Stop Oil’ protesters this week, have been timed to coincide with this.

Supporters of the movement have vowed to continue the disruption until the government makes a change in regard to their gas and oil projects in the UK.

In a statement from a spokesperson for the group, they said that they will be returning everyday ‘until their demand is met’,

They said: said “This is an act of resistance against a criminal government and their genocidal death project. We should be halting all new gas and oil production not
adding to our problems.

“We will not stand by while everything we know, and love is wilfully destroyed. We do
this because it is the right thing to do and so we have a duty, a responsibility to continue.

The Just Stop Oil protests have been using blockages in central London to made a statement and mass trespasses at oil terminals have also been organised since April 1 this year.

Over 1400 arrests have been made relating to Just Stop Oil actions since the beginning of the protests in central London in April.

The group said: “We will not be intimidated by changes to the law, even when the
government uses private injunctions to try to silence peaceful people.
Our supporters understand that the government should be doing all it can
to protect us from a frightening future.”
