Another attempt to build flats above a row of shops in Woodley has been submitted, after a previous attempt by developers was thrown out in July.

The latest application, once again submitted by property development company Riverflow Reading Limited, seeks prior approval for the construction of an additional floor at 59 Crockhamwell Road.

The previous submission, which sought to build another two floors above the shops providing nine new residential units, was rejected after the apartments were deemed to have been inadequate in terms of size, bedroom width and storage space.

Riverflow are now hoping to construct a single additional floor above the three retail units to contain five new flats.

Number 59 Crockhamwell Road is a two-storey terraced building split into three units, with commercial premises at the front and storage areas to the rear and on the first floor.

The first unit is occupied by hardware supplier Robert Dyas, the second by Children’s charity Benardos, whilst the third has been vacant since 2020.

If approved, the five proposed flats would consist of one studio, as well as two one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments, which the applicant states have been designed “to comply with the technical housing standards”.

The new flats would also have space for cycle storage, located to the rear of the building at ground floor level.
