Former Reading midfielder Charlie Adam has announced his retirement from football.

A popular figure in his season with the club, the 'Scottish Pirlo' made 27 appearances for the Royals in the twlight days of his near 20 year professional career.

Making his name at Rangers, he was a god-like figure at Blackpool before a £7m move took him to European giants Liverpool.

A disappointing spell at Anfield was followed by seven largely successful years with Stoke City, regularly punching above thier weight in the top half of the Premier League.

Joining Reading in 2019 under Jose Gomes, he worked well under Mark Bowen but was released upon the expiriation of his deal in 2020.

Famously scoring in a New Years Day win over Fulham at Craven Cottage, with a now iconic image of him celebrating in front of the travelling supporters, he was always a well-respected figure in RG2.

Ending his career by captaining boyhood club Dundee, he has already taken steps to move into a coaching career.

Announcing his decision on social media, he said: "I feel now is the right time to announce my retirement.

"A huge thank you goes to Glasgow Rangers, St Mirren, Blackpool, Liverpool, Stoke City, Reading and Dundee supporters- hopefully I've gave you all some memorable moments along the way."
