Reading match winner Tom Ince felt his side were more than deserving of the victory, against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

The 30-year-old popped up with the game's only goal just past the hour mark, curling a beautfiul free-kick past the helpless Ben Amos to see the Royals rise to third ahead of the international break.

Going into the game off the back of a heavy 3-0 home defeat to Sunderland, the first half at the DW Stadium was about battling and keeping themselves into the game.

A much more open half followed, with both sides have multiple ocassions to find the net.

Yakou Meite and Ince could've bagged themselves more goals, while Charlie Wyke and Will Keane came close for the Latics.

Speaking to BBC Berkshire after the game, the midfielder explained how they planned to bounce back from Black Cat defeat.

"We had to have a bit of a reality check, and I think that was good in that Sunderland came and showed we still have a long way to go," he said. "Time and again you’ve seen early on this season the reaction of the squad. To come here and fight. They’re a very one-dimensional team: they get it long and try to get on the knockdowns, but we had to battle, and we knew we had bits of quality to win the game.

"I think we probably deserved it. First half was not the most entertaining game to watch but for us it was about staying in the game. On Wednesday, we left ourselves too open spaces, today we looked a lot more compact and dealt with their aerial threat.

"I thought we had the better chances- I know they hit the post and had a few half chances but as far as clear-cut chances to put the game to bed, we deserved to win."
