Reading debutant Amadou Mbengue had to fly overseas on the day of the game ahead of making his first appearance in the 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

The 20-year-old former Metz star joined the Royals on a short term deal last week and played the final 11 minutes at the DW Stadium.

However, he only arrived back in the UK that morning, having to fly to Paris in order to arrange his visa ahead of making an appearances.

Coming on to help see out the game, the versatile defensive option played a wing-back role in Lancashire as Tom Ince's direct free-kick ensured Reading bounced back from Wednesday's 3-0 defeat to Sunderland.

Speaking after the game, manager Paul Ince praised the youngster for his commitment to the cause.

"We only managed to get it over the line today," he explained. "He’s been in Paris or something getting a visa so he’s flown from Paris to Manchester to get up here just so we could put him on the bench. This is where we’re at. People are making sacrifices for us- we’ve just got to stick together and play the way we know we can play.

"When he was at Metz he played as a midfield six, a right-wing-back, he’s even played left back and centre-half. I don’t see him as a centre-half at all, he can play on the right-wing-back and he can play as a six. He’s quick, he’s aggressive, he’s a good young player. It’s another addition to our side. we’ve got to have strength in depth with all the games we’ve got coming up in October."
