Reading boss Paul Ince explained that he is still trying to find the right balance in his team after switching to a five at the back system.

Playing a 4231 under the-then interim manager last term, the Royals have lined up in a variation of 532 for most of the new campaign.

Currently in the top three of the Championship table, with four wins in the last five matches, it has been a good start for Reading.

However, Ince is still not happy with the setup, hoping that returning injured players can fix the 'balance' of the team.

Speaking to the media after of the clash with Watford on Saturday, he explained: "I looked at the team last year and we conceded 87 goals. Over 70 per cent of teams played five at the back last year and I thought we had the personally to do that, with Tom [Ince] playing off Lucas [Joao] or Yakou [Meite].

"I think the three works for us, I think we look more structured in that system. We’re still learning the three, we only started doing it this year and [Tom] Holmes and [Tom] McIntyre are 22 so they’re still young kids learning. You’ve got Junior [Hoilett] playing left-wing-back, ideally that will be Baba [Rahman] to bring more balance to us. I don’t feel at this moment in time we have the right balance."

One player who has particularly caught the eye is Paul's son Tom.

Signed on a three-year deal in the summer, the former Derby County and Stoke City winger won Man of the Match in the win over the Potters.

Adding explaination on his role in particular, Ince said: "I look at him last year when we played a 433 and I like him on the right-hand side so he can get at people and get more shots off, so naturally that’s where I want to play him.

"We’re playing people out of position- Tom was playing right side of centre midfield, Junior at left wing back has been outstanding but it’s got to be balanced. For me, I’d like to play him on the right hand side. I can still do that, do a 523 or a 343 so I can mix and match. The way it’s falling for us with Mamadou being injured, he can fill in those position but I want us to be more attacking.

"We sometimes look like we’re a counter-attacking team but sometimes I don’t want us to be that. We can play anyway; look against Blackburn with the press high, we’re playing well. For Thomas, whatever he gives you, he gives you. I like to get on the ball and create things so hopefully I can jig it about within the system."
