A band, a DJ and a Thai buffet are being hosted at a pub near Reading after it was ‘transformed’ by a makeover.

The Jolly Farmer, in Davis Street, Hurst, will auction holidays to Spain and Tenerife and a signed Liverpool football shirt as part of the event on August 25.

Tickets cost £20, which includes buffet food, and the money raised will go to Macmillan Cancer Research Trust.

“We want to be a community pub. We support the air ambulance but want to do more,” said pub manager Edward Lawrence, 23, from Reading.

Edward, who spent the last seven years in the catering and wedding industry, added;  “We’re pleased to have had great comments about the refurbishment. People have said it was just what the pub needed. They told us they liked the warm welcome, friendly staff, good food and good service.”

The walls are adorned with old photos of the pub, which was built in the 1860, and Edward plans to display old farming equipment, tools and wheels soon.

White and blue colours have been added to the inside, with more plants and plans for a cocktail bar and barista-style coffee machine.

Edward said the beer garden has been transformed with covered dining areas including a pergola, a large wooden gazebo and booths, decorated with bright flowers.

Hurst Morris People will be joining in the fun on Thursday. Squire Karen Ricketts said: “We’ve danced at the Jolly Farmer many times. We’re delighted to support such a great charity on this occasion.”

Beers include Timothy Taylor and Tribute plus a Rebellion monthly guest special.

The event begins at 5pm until late with music finishing at 11.30pm.
