A park containing semi-ancient woodland has been left burnt and blackened by repeated wildfires.

Blazes ripped through McIlroy Park, Tilehurst, three times amid extreme heatwaves and record-breaking temperatures.

Photographs show dark lung shapes where one fire took place, while another threatened the treeline.

The most recent fire was tackled on August 9 at 5pm, when firefighters fought to contain flames which had spread from the grass to several trees.

The crew from Windsor Fire Station was on the scene for around 35 minutes.

At the same time, six fire engines were attempting to put out a wildfire in Southcote field.

A second fire occurred in McIlroy Park on August 4 and a third took place in the field but the date could not be confirmed.

The park contains of semi-ancient woodland, bluebells, wood anenomes and butchers broom, according to Natural England.

The incidents are the latest of numerous fires in the open attended by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Fire engines rushed to a fire in woodland near Lower Way, Thatcham on Monday (August 8), before using backpack extinguishers, beaters and a hose reel to tackle the fire.

The same day, Cherry Avenue in Slough saw three crews tackle a wildfire which had spread across several gardens, destroying four sheds and a number of trees.

On July 30, an off-road vehicle accompanied three engines to a fire which had spread extensively across a field in Boveney Lock, Windsor.

On July 18, firefighters were called to Sulham Woods, where a fire was tearing through a wooded area.
