Iconic Reading forward Nicky Forster labelled the Royals' 2-1 win over Cardiff City a 'good start' when appearing on BBC Radio Berkshire.

Forster scored 67 goals in 215 appearances for the club between 1999 and 2005, a golden period which saw the club promoted from the third tier into the second and on the brink of Premier League football.

A guest invited to the match on Saturday, Forster was brought on the radio to discuss the match and club in general with former teammate Ady Williams and former manager   Reading Mick Gooding.

Speaking after the comeback victory, he said: "I’ve been here today as a guest, and I was talking to Mark Bowen [Head of Football Operations] before the match, and he was explaining how it is a three-year-plan. To think that we have to be up this season would be premature and a mistake because you’ve got to build bit-by-bit and create momentum. It doesn’t just happen overnight, so those small incremental changes have got to be put in place and reap the long-term rewards.

"I think today was a good start, especially after last weekend’s loss. The stadium didn’t look particularly full, August is a difficult time, so to get the win under your belt is a really good thing."

Despite falling behind in the fourth minute, a Shane Long penalty and Tom Ince's long-range strike was enough to turn the game on its head and earn the first win of the season.

On the match itself, Forster explained: "I thought Reading deserved to win it on reflection of the whole game. I thought they started poorly, and Cardiff were much the better team, in the first part of the first half especially. It was a poor free kick to give away in the corner and an unmarked header in the box, at any level you’ll get punished, and after that the keeper made a good save which could’ve been two.

"From then on, second part of the first half I thought Reading were much the better team and second half I thought we outworked them. They looked bigger and stronger, but we outworked them."
