Home Bargains is set to open a new store in Reading as plans for it have been given the go ahead.

The budget store will occupy the former Go Outdoors store at the Brunel Retail Park in Rose Kiln Lane, Whitley.

Go Outdoors vacated the retail park this  February.

To prepare for the coming of Home Bargains, retail park owners MCTGF applied to combine units 4 and 5 to provide the new occupants with 4,546 square metres of floor space.

Of that, 840 metres of space will be reserved for food and drink to be eaten off premises.

The plan was discussed at a Reading Borough Council planning committee meeting yesterday (July, 20).

Councillor Andrew Hornsby-Smith (Labour, Church) said: “I entirely support the application, I welcome that two empty units are going to be filled.

“That’s good news, not only for Whitley but neighbouring Church ward as well.”

Work to combine the two units to make way for Home Bargains was agreed unanimously.

A condition of the approval dictates that items that can be sold at Home Bargains, which includes DIY, furniture and home products, car parts and accessories, sports and leisure goods, games toys and items for pets.

The condition applies to any future occupants of Units 4 and 5 as well.

Unit 5 used to be occupied by SCS Sofas, which closed in 2019.
