Reading have announced that defender Tom Holmes is to take up the role of vice captain.

The 22-year-old has been with the Royals since the age of eight, making more than 75 appearances since his debut in 2018.

A regular over the past two seasons, he scored his first goal for the club last season with an overhead kick against Hull City.

He also got practise wearing the armband, leading out the side in a 0-3 defeat to Swansea City in the Carabao Cup.

Signing a new three-year deal in the summer, the centre-back will be under contract at his hometown club until 2025.

Speaking on his decision for the role, manager Paul Ince said: "Tom is a fantastic defender who is committed to the cause from the first to the final minute in every match he plays. He is young, his game continues to develop and grow, but his ability is unquestionable and his leadership skills – even at the young age he still is - are so important to the dynamics of this team. He is Reading Football Club through and through and I am certain he will go on to make an excellent captain in the future.”
