COUNCIL bosses have reminded residents of Reading Old Cemetery’s opening times after a man had to be rescued from the graveyard after it closed.
Firefighters were called out to the iconic town landmark just after 8pm on Monday, July 4 after a man was locked in the perimeters.

Startling pictures show two firefighters using a ladder to lift the man over the Cemetery’s walls in order to free him from the graveyard.
A council spokesperson said: “It’s unfortunate that firefighters were called out for this incident.
“Reading Old Cemetery is open from 9am to 8pm with those times clearly marked on signage at the cemetery entrance.

“Before the gates are locked every evening our security contractor does a routine inspection of the grounds.
“We can only assume that the gentleman concerned was not aware of the closing times or had lost track of the time and that he was missed by security staff on this occasion.
“An emergency number is provided inside the gate for people to call in the event of getting locked in to prevent the emergency services from being called.”
