Former Reading Women's midfielder Fara Williams believes this could be the year that England win a major tournament, with the Women's European Championships kicking off tomorrow (July 6).

Central star Williams took part in five international tournaments with England on route to picking up a record 172 caps between 2001 and 2019.

Being hosted on home soil, the Three Lionesses start their campaign at Old Trafford against Austria, beginning more than four weeks of international football.

Norway and Northern Ireland make up Sarina Wiegman's side's group stage opponents before the knock-out phase begins.

England reached the last four of the 2017 competition, as well as the last four in the 2015 and 2019 World Cup's.

Despite heartbreak over recent tournaments, mirroring that of Gareth Southgate's men's side, Williams believes  this could be the year that they break the curse and win the competition.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, the former Liverpool and Arsenal midfielder said: "I reckon it’s going to be certainly four straight semi-finals and hopefully this is the year where we can make the one step further and go past that semi-final and bring it home. I think we’ve got great squad depth, great balance throughout the squad with youth and experience. We’re coming into the tournament unbeaten and on a great run with a great manager. I think this could be our year, dare I say it."

London-born Williams spent four years with Kelly Chambers' Reading, her final club before retirement in 2021.
