A 2-1 comeback win over Italy secured a place in the Under-19 European Championship final for England- their fourth final of the competition since 2005.

Taking place on Friday, Ian Foster's Three Lions face Israel live on BBC Iplayer.

Despite no Royals squad members being involved this year, there are multiple links to the club in previous attempts at European glory with six former stars involved in semi-final or final appearances.

2005

Andrew Taylor

18 years old in 2005, the North-East native six years with Middlesbrough making almost 150 appearances- 20 of which came the season immediately after his involvement in the Under-19 Euros. Finishing as runner-up in 2005, Taylor went on to play for the likes of Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic before spending the 2015/16 campaign on loan with Reading. Playing back-up to Jordan Obita for much of the season, he still played more than 20 times for Steve Clarke and Brian McDermott as the club reached the FA Cup quarter-final and came 17th in the Championship.

Matt Mills

A highly regarded Southampton academy graduate at the time, Mills moved to Manchester City midway through the following season. Playing just twice for the Citizens, Doncaster Rovers saw him become a mainstay and prompted Reading to splash a reported £2m on the defender. Playing 75 times over two years, the centre-back captained the club to an FA Cup quarter-final and a play-off final before being sold to Leicester City for more than double what McDermott had paid for him upon arrival.

2009

Danny Drinkwater

The most recent Royals connection, Drinkwater spent last season on loan at the SCL Stadium from Chelsea, playing more than 30 times as the club survived in the Championship.

He was a youth prospect at Manchester United in 2009 when England were again runners up, failing to make an appearance at Old Trafford but enjoying four loan spells.

Six years followed at Leicester City, including a remarkable Premier League win, before a big money move to Chelsea.

Reading were one of four loan spells away from Stamford Bridge, but he is now a free agent after being released.

2012

Nathaniel Chalobah

England were knocked out in the semi-final’s a decade ago, with former Royals loanee Chalobah putting in a commanding midfield performance.

One of the star names in Chelsea’s Academy, he spent six seasons out on temporary moves- including a 20-match spell with Reading in 2015, appearing in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal.

Leaving the Blues permanently in 2017, he spent four years with Watford before moving to Championship winners Fulham ahead of last season.

Benik Afobe

The only player who had appeared for Reading directly before his involvement in the competition, striker Afobe spent the second half of the 2011/12 campaign on loan in Berkshire from Arsenal.

With the Royals rampaging to Championship victory, he managed just three appearances during his spell- not enough for a winners medal.

He made sure he did enough in 2018, scoring six goals as Wolverhampton Wanderers won promotion back to the Premier League under Nuno Espirito Santo.

After scoring 13 last season on loan with Millwall, he recently signed a permanent deal to remain at the Den.

2016

Reece Oxford

Three seasons away on loan yielded just 22 more appearances, including five for Reading in 2017, before a permanent move to Germany with Augsburg. Still only 23, he has played almost 70 times for the Bundesliga side.
