A boy from Reading completed a decathlon to mark his 10th birthday in aid of promoting the benefits of sport and exercise in maintaining mental health and wellbeing.

Dexter Rosier, along with Team GB hockey stars Amy Tennant and Sarah Jones, completed the gruelling challenges such as 100m sprint, hurdles, shot put and javelin on Fridat, June 24, to raise funds for charity Sports in Mind.

The charity, founded over a decade ago in the town, seeks to "improve the lives of people experiencing mental health problems through sport and physical activity" by providing sport and exercise sessions for those experiencing mental health problems.

Up to this point he has rasied almost £650, more than £100 over his target of £500.

Primary school student Dexter said: "I’m so pleased I completed what I set out to do, the experience has been fantastic. I will continue to spread the importance of exercise and how good it is for your mental health. Thank you to everyone that has supported me!”

CEO of Sport in Mind, Neil Harris, added: “It was fantastic to see Dexter up against Britain’s best hockey goalkeeper and watching him complete a dive in the London Olympic Aquatics Centre. We are in awe of Dexter’s dedication to raising awareness and educating young people on the benefits of being active for good mental health.

"We were delighted to have the Mayor of Reading join Dexter for some sporting activities alongside Cllr Eden highlighting the message that sport and physical activity helps support good mental health for children and young people."
