Reading defender Tom Holmes admitted that the structure behind the scenes was a key factor in committing his future to the club.

The defender rose through the Academy ranks with his boyhood club and has made more than 70 appearances since his debut in 2018.

Signing a three-year deal earlier this month, he followed the likes of Andy Yiadom and Tom Ince in remaining at the club after last season's Championship survival.

Speaking to the media in the first week of pre-season, the 22-year-old was very happy to sign on the dotted line: "I was in the perfect scenario," he started. "I love Reading and this is where I've grown up so I've got a lot of ties here so I am delighted with the outcome.

"I'm just hoping that over this transfer window we can get bodies in where we can put something together to be competitive this year."

Alongside the playing staff, the off-field staff has had a reshuffle over the summer, with the likes of Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki returning to RG2.

Holmes added, "I've really liked Mark coming back in. He was he was also a big influence with the decision because I felt like maybe it was something that was missing since he left in that in that role.

"The club has more structure which is settling for players. They seem excited and a lot of energy, which I think is massive to keep keep the players going and keep spirits high."

Two players who did not sign on where key midfielders John Swift and Josh Laurent- both moving on the West Brom and Stoke City respectively.

Holmes, a Royals fan himself, couldn't contain his disappointment over the departures from the squad.

"Swift I felt like it was inevitable but I was gutted with Josh going because he was he was a massive character, massive for the team.

"When I came into the team he also signed it so he was a big part of my first experience so it was sad to see him go."
