Reading have triggered an extension clause in the contract of young defender Jeriel Dorsett, keeping him at the club for another season.

The 20-year-old played more than 40 matches last season for League Two side Rocdale, impressing enough to be named the club's Young Player of the Season.

This left a mark on the powers that be at Bearwood, who have extended the stay of the Academy graduate.

Playing just two first team matches for the Royals in the past, both in the EFL Cup, the decision not to offer captain Michael Morrison a new deal could pave the way for Dorsett to join Tom Holmes and Tom McIntyre in cementing their place in the first team.

The Under-23 squad returned to pre-season training yesterday, and Dorsett told the club how he is looking forward to getting going in Berkshire again.

“It’s nice to be back; it’s been a while since I’ve been here!” said Dorsett.

“I had a good summer… a little rest period for me. And now it’s back to it! Getting back to fitness and looking forward to getting the season started.

“Coming back here, I feel a lot more confident in my ability and I’m ready to prove my worth."

After former Reading striker Noel Hunt took over the youth side in February, the defender has a new man to impress if he wants to progress at RG2- something Dorsett is looking forward to.

"I can’t wait to start working with Noel," he started. "He’s a great man, a great guy. I’ve had a few conversations with him and we’re getting along really well.

“I’m looking forward to working alongside him, doing what he wants me to do, and trying to push on into the first team."
