Leaking toxic waste has been found fly-tipped in a Reading field.

Oil Barrels, plastic containers full of hazardous corrosive liquid and tires were dumped near Cow Lane, west of the Rivermead Leisure Complex site.

A West Reading resident, who wished to remain anonymous, discovered the waste while walking his dog on Wednesday, June 8.

“It’s just disgusting,” said the resident, who suspected it originated from a mechanic.

“It is toxic waste, those drums are full of oil and they’re all leaking, and the other containers are full of God-knows what, and that’s all leaking and instantly burning the ground around it.”

“You wouldn’t want to touch it without proper clothing.”

A spokesperson for Reading Borough Council said they had received a report and are investigating the fly-tip.

“We are still investigating its origins and are also in the process of arranging a clear-up at the site, including specialist removal of the toxic elements,” they said.

“Reading Borough Council has a zero tolerance policy on fly-tipping, and we have a team of officers who investigate offences such as this and where possible prosecute offenders, with a maximum penalty of 5 years custodial sentence and/or fine.”
