The 32-year-old from Hungerford embarked on a non-league journey after release by the Royals in 2005, eventually taking him from Kintbury and Thatcham to the brink of an England call-up.

Making his name with Swindon Town, Burnley and QPR, he was most recently at Loftus Road for a third spell but was released by the West London club at the end of last season.

According to FootyInsiders, the Berkshire resident has impressed new Head of Football Mark Bowen, who worked alongside Austin at Southampton.

Now a free agent, the occasional TalkSPORT radio presenter will no dobut have attracted interest across the EFL.

He would bring some experience to a front line which could be light if the club were to let star man Lucas Joao move on in the summer.
