Platinum Jubilee party planners are being warned to not put bunting across the roads in West Berkshire – even if their roads are closed.

The move has been branded as “health and safety gone mad” by one frustrated party organiser in Newbury, who wishes to remain anonymous.

“We have applied to close our road for the Jubilee celebration and have been told that even though the road is closed West Berkshire is not allowing any bunting to be put up across the carriage way,” she said.

West Berkshire Council has issued dozens of road closure orders for the Jubilee weekend, and has also published a guide for party planners.

The council told her:  “No street party is allowed to attach any decorations to any street lighting.  All organisers should be aware that bunting is not permitted across the carriageway or to be attached to street lighting as is has been stated in our Jubilee Pack on how to hold a street party from the start.”

The guide says: “Signs/banners/bunting must not be attached across the road or to lampposts but securely attached to private property instead.”

The guide also warns about selling alcohol.

“You cannot sell alcohol at your street party unless you are running the event from licensed premises, and the alcohol is to be consumed on the premises or the land attached to it,” it says.
