An Earley man made an ‘exciting’ discovery earlier this week when he found a meteorite-type rock in his garden.
Sunil Bharadwaj found the jagged black rock, which weighs 59 grams, on his lawn on Monday, May 23.
The 41-year-old showed off the fascinating find online speculating that the rock may be a meteor fragment.
Speaking to the Chronicle, the IT director said: “It was exciting because I have never found anything like this.
“More than me, my nine-year-old son was super excited to see it.”
Sunil suggested the rock could be a meteorite after claiming it was warm when he discovered it on his lawn.
He also said he had cut the grass the previous evening and the rock was not to be seen, suggesting it may have fallen from the sky overnight.
Mr Bharadwaj told the Chronicle he has tried to establish if the rock is indeed from outer space.
He contacted the Head of Mineralogy and Petrology at the Natural Museum of History in Wales and their team asked him to send more pictures and details.
Through his research, he also discovered the best way to preserve a meteorite is to limit contact with bare hands and to wrap it in aluminium.
The Chronicle has contacted the UK Meteor Observation Network for clarity on the origins of the mysterious black object.
Meanwhile, the anxious wait for confirmation continues for Sunil and his nine-year-old son.
