The 2022/23 Championship teams have now been confirmed following the League One play-off final and the culmination of the Premier League season.

Reading finished the 2021/22 campaign in 21st position, securing their place in the second tier with two matches to spare despite a six-point deduction for breaching Profit and Sustainability regulations.

Near-neighbours Wycombe Wanderers were in with a shout of bouncing straight back to the Championship after beating MK Dons in the play-off semi-finals, but Gareth Ainsworth’s Chairboys were despatched 2-0 at Wembley Stadium by former English champions Sunderland.

The Black Cats, one of Britain’s most successful football teams, were relegated from the second division in 2018, just one season after being relegated out of the Premier League but have returned to the Championship after finishing fifth in League One but getting past Sheffield Wednesday and Wycombe in the play-offs.

After two previous failed attempts in the end-of-season knockout format, Alex Neil has led the North-East side back in his first half-season in charge.

Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic had already confirmed their place in the division by winning automatic promotion.

Meanwhile, returning to the Championship from the other direction, after relegation from the Premier League, is Lancashire side Burnley.

Norwich City and Watford, both promoted in the 2020/21 season, make an immediate return to the second tier yet the Clarets are back after a six-year spell in the top-flight.

Going into the final match with their future in their own hands, Mike Jackson’s side had to beat Newcastle United at Turf Moor to secure Premier League survival. However, defeat to the Magpies, twinned with Leeds United’s win at Brentford, condemned them to a Championship return and two meetings with Paul Ince’s Royals.

One side is yet to be confirmed however, with the Championship play-offs yet to take place. One of Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest will remain in the Royals' division while one will be playing Premier League football next campaign.
