Reading are making a "last ditch attempt" to keep star John Swift at the SCL Stadium beyond the summer.

The midfield maestro is the club's outright top scorer and assist maker, with 11 and 13 respectively, but is out of contract at the end of June.

According to the Athletic, Championship rivals West Brom are "optimistic" of signing the 26-year-old to bolster their promotion bid- with the likes of Leeds United and Burnley ready to swoop if the move to the Hawthorns does not come to fruition.

However, Berkshire Live report that the club, and in particular potential new Director of Football Mark Bowen, are making a final bid to keep him in RG2.

The report goes on to say that the club are meeting with his representatives at the end of the week.

Swift joined the club in 2016 and has made more than 200 appearances for the Royals.

Most of the 14 out of contract players will leave the club, but the club are "hopeful" that a few can sign.

This comes just 24 hours after news broke that defender Andy Yiadom is in talks over a new deal.
