Reading FC Academy graduate Nelson Abbey caused a stir on social media with a misconstrued Twitter message.

Centre-back Abbey has made two Cup appearances for the Royals across the previous two seasons but has made his name in the youth sides, making five PL2 appearances for Noel Hunt’s side this season and a regular in the team’s journey to the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup Final.

After the impressive 3-1 win over table-toppers Fulham on Monday, April 26, Abbey posted a tweet with the caption “Last Dance.”

This sent Royals fans into a frenzy, believing that it signalled his departure from the club.

However, the former England Under-17s defender, who’s contract is set to be up at the end of the current campaign, quickly removed the tweet and posted an explanation.

According to the 18-year-old, his tweet was to signal the last match at the SCL Stadium for the youth sides, who have one league match remaining against Middlesbrough.

Greeted with a big response, many fans tweeted their bemusement at the saga- with question marks still hanging over Abbey’s future at RG2.

With key stars such as Michael Morrison and Tom Holmes out of contract in the summer too, it could be a good chance for the youngster to show what he can do, if given a contract extension.
