FORMER Reading FC and England goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has been hit with a hefty court fine after being caught speeding.

The 32-year-old shot-stopper, of Windlesham, Surrey, has also been convicted of another driving matter following a hearing at Reading Magistrates’ Court.

According to a court file, Southampton FC star McCarthy was caught going 47mph on London Road in Sunningdale, which is a 30mph road.

The offence, which McCarthy initially pleaded not guilty to in November of last year, was committed on April 27, 2021, in a 2019-plate BMW M1.

He was also found guilty of failing to help police identify a driver of a vehicle -- namely the same BMW -- between May 7, 2021 and June 4, 2021.

At a sentencing hearing earlier this week, McCarthy was fined £750, ordered to pay a £75 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs.

According to multiple online reports McCarthy earns around £50,000 a week playing for the Saints.

The Surrey man was also given six points on his driving licence.

He was sentenced at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, March 11, although he did not appear for the hearing.

McCarthy, who has plied his trade in the Premier League for Southampton since August 2016, came through Reading’s academy and made 70 appearances in all for the hoops.

He was sold to QPR in August 2014 after a number of stellar performances in net for the Royals during their top-flight campaign in 2012/2013.

The 32-year-old joined Crystal Palace from QPR one year later before moving to Southampton the year following.

McCarthy made one appearance for the England national team in November 2018.
