A Reading councillor believes that the Thames Path surfacing issue will remain, despite work having started to fix it.

The footpath between the Thames Path and Coal Wood, near Napier Road and the Tesco supermarket, is expected to be redeveloped for up to three weeks, having begun on 24 January.

The Thames Path has had issues in the past, with blockages and surface work causing disruption to residents.

Reading Green Party councillor, Cllr Rob White, welcomes this development, but believes it will not solve the problem.

He said: “The uneven surface by the Thames in this location is a trip hazard for walkers and unpleasant for cyclists.

“The problem is mainly tree roots pushing up through the path.

“We want the surface improved for walkers and cyclists.

“The council did this along the London Road pavement a while ago by building it up.

“I expect the council works will improve the situation but not fully resolve this issue.”

The footpath will not remain completely closed to the public, with varying sections shut off at any one time.

Reading Borough Council recommends seeking an alternative route.
