A Reading fireman is taking on yet another challenge to add to his extensive collection next month, as he cycles as far as he can in four days.

Starting on 6 February, directly after finishing a night shift at Caversham Road Fire Station, Scott Butler is jumping on a bicycle he picked up on Facebook Market Place and heading north, in his full gear.

However crazy that sounds, Mr Butler is never one to be fazed, having already completed challenges such as rowing the Atlantic Ocean and climbing mountains in Russia.

Speaking exclusively to the Reading Chronicle ahead of his next adventure, Mr Butler said: “This is just what I do, I do stupid challenges.

“I’ve got plenty of other plans, but I needed something to do now so I was just scrolling through Facebook Market Place and saw the bike and wondered what I could do with it.

“I was thinking of where to go but then I thought why not just head north and see where I end up.

“I’ll hopefully stay at fire stations along the way.

“The difficulty is I have absolutely no idea how much distance I’ll be covering each day.

“It’s going to be pretty grim I imagine, but hopefully the uniform will raise a few smiles with the people you pass.”

“My biggest feat would be rowing the Atlantic, but that was a team of three.

“The biggest challenge was cycling from here to Bulgaria and then becoming the first person to solo row across the Black Sea in Georgia.

“Logistically, time-wise and being on your own a lot, that was probably the toughest.”

Despite having not set any real goals, Mr Butler does have two final destinations in mind.

He exclaimed: “My family ties are to Middlesbrough so if I can make it to Middlesbrough that would be amazing, or Manchester where my team Brentford are playing Manchester City on the last night of my travels.”

Having self-published multiple books and partaken in multiple hair-raising adventures, Mr Butler is certainly one to seize every day.

This mantra has remained throughout, even when picking up injuries and ailments.

Mr Butler continued: “I was trying to write a book where I do something different every day for a year, with around 21 days to go I crashed a speedway motorbike and smashed my femoral artery.

“People told me to slow down and that I couldn’t do these things, so I wanted to prove to people that I could.

“Just being out there and testing yourself, meeting new people, it becomes a journey of discovery.

“You only get one shot at this life, if you’re busy and enjoy being busy then that’s great.

“Then you appreciate your five minutes on the sofa when you get them.”
