Reading FC boss Veljko Paunovic has provided an update on the future of striker Andy Carroll after the former England international scored his second goal for the Royals in their 2-1 defeat to Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Carroll battled admirably with limited service and got on the scoresheet with a well-taken header but the game at The Riverside could be his final one in for Reading with his contract expiring this weekend.

Asked whether or not he expected Carroll to depart, manager Paunovic responded:

"I don’t expect that although there’s a technical issue right now. Technical in terms of his contract expires today but that doesn’t mean that he’s going to leave.

"But his performance today and in his time he’s been with us definitely is going to bring him opportunities. In my conversations with him, I only felt that there is a desire on his end to remain with us. But this is also a footballing opportunity for him, hopefully, he stays and as soon as possible."

Paunovic and Reading have made it clear for weeks now that they hope to tie Carroll down to a new contract at least until the end of the season. But with Premier League interest in Carroll, they could face an uphill battle to convince him to stay.

Carroll has started Reading's last six games and it would be a huge blow if he does depart. On a positive note, Lucas Joao returned to action for Reading on Saturday, coming off the bench for the final few minutes - a welcome boost for Paunovic regardless of what Carroll decides to do about his future.
