The RSPCA is appealing for information after six rabbits - including four giant rabbits - were found dumped in boxes in Reading.

A member of the public discovered two cardboard boxes, with three rabbits in each box, left in MacArthur Close in Reading on Monday, 3 January at around 9.50am and contacted the animal welfare charity.

Unfortunately, none of the rabbits were microchipped.

RSPCA animal rescue officer, Carl Hone, is now appealing for information to try and find out where the rabbits have come from.

He said: “Sadly, the RSPCA is called to many cases where rabbits have been abandoned in boxes or cages

“Rabbits are one of the nation’s most popular pets but we often see them abandoned when owners decide they no longer want them or can’t cope with their needs.

“It is important to understand all rabbits' needs, and whether you can provide these for all their lives, before considering having them as pets.”

The rabbits have now been taken into care while investigations continue and if no one comes forward to claim them they will be rehomed.

The animal welfare charity operates 365 days a year and this Christmas and New Year was no exception.

Over the festive period (24 December - 1 January), the RSPCA’s officers and inspectors responded to a total of 14,301 calls from members of the public.

Throughout the whole of December 2021, there were 58,394 calls from members of the public.

There were 1,478 reports of abandoned animals - up 29% on last year when the teams were called to reports of 1,049 abandoned animals during the same period.

Anyone with information can call the RSPCA on 0300 123 8018.
