2021 was a busy year for Reading Crown Court with several high-profile cases passing through the town’s hall of justice.

It ended with three men being convicted of murder following three separate trials in the last few months of the year.

And it appears that 2022 will be another busy year for the court with a number of hearings relating to recent incidents in the town set to take place.

Here’s who is set to appear at Reading Crown Court in the next few months (dates listed are subject to change).

Hakeem Kigundu

31-year-old Kigundu was charged with one count of murder and one count of arson following an incident in which flats at Rowe Court caught fire on December 15.

One person died following the incident, with two more still missing.

Kigundu, formerly of Rowe Court, appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court on December 18.

He appeared at Reading Crown Court on Tuesday, December 21 and is set to appear at the same court again for another hearing on February 11, 2022.

Seven men and women charged in connection with the death of Reece Heffernan

Four men have been charged with the murder of Reece Heffernan, 22, who died on Halloween at his home on Romany Lane, Tilehurst.

A 17-year-old boy from Earley was charged with one count of murder, one count of perverting the course of justice and one count of possession of bladed article.

Hamzah Ahmed, aged 18, of Jubilee Road, Reading, was charged with one count of murder.

Tuviah Thompson-Hordle, aged 18, of Brant Close, Arborfield, was charged with one count of murder and one count of possession of a knife in a public place.

Carlos Daniel Capitao Mor Da Fonseca, aged 23, of Fawn Drive, Three Mile Cross, was charged with murder, possession of a bladed article and perverting the course of justice.

Umer Arshad, aged 23, of Waterloo Road, Wokingham, was charged with one count of perverting the course of justice.

Damien Wozniak, 18, and Madison Henderson, 19, both of Kings Road, have been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and possession of cannabis with intent to supply.

Henderson is due to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court for a hearing on January 12.

A provisional trial date for this case has been set for Monday, June 27, 2022, and, should it go ahead as planned, could last around six weeks.

A number of hearings to iron out legal arguments are expected before any trial takes place.

George Hassall

Burghclere man Hassall, 22, was charged with section 18 wounding with intent following a reported stabbing of an 18-year-old woman in Coley Park in November.

He was remanded in custody after appearing at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Friday, November 26.

He is next due to appear before a judge at Reading Crown Court on 7 January 2022.
