This Remembrance display was voted the best in Tilehurst by members of a 2,700-strong Facebook group.

Created by Phillip Costello in his garden, the display features poppies, military helmets and a flag bearing the words ‘Lest We Forget’.

Poppies grew on the battlefields after World War One ended and their symbolism was immortalised in the famous poem In Flanders Fields.

The phrase 'lest we forget' is adopted from the 1897 poem ‘Recessional’ by Rudyard Kipling and repurposed as a reminder of those who lost their lives at war so that that future generations may live in relative peace.

Mr Costello’s display received 134 votes, 36 more than second place, won by Philip Freeman, and in third place came a display at Asda created by pupils from Kings Academy Prospect.
