Reading FC's former owner Sir John Madejski has labelled the potential points deduction looming over the club as a 'devastating'.

The club potentially face a deduction of up to nine points for breaching spending rules following several years of wasteful spending.

Championship rivals Derby County have also faced a points deduction as a result of breaching spending rules.

Speaking to Talksport, Madejski said he 'feels sorry' for Royals supporters, who could see their side plunge into the relegation zone, despite currently sitting 14th in the Championship table after eight games.

"I know the owners of the club are trying to do their best and get Reading into a very good place" said Madejski.

"But, unfortunately, you do have to adhere to the rules and regulations that are set out in the game.

"If you break those rules you have to suffer the consequences.

"I feel sorry for everybody at the club, and certainly the fans.

"It's bad enough trying to get anywhere in football, but when you're faced with a nine point deduction, if that's what it's going to be, it's pretty devastating."

The club are yet to issue any comment on the report of a looming points deduction.
