Reading are closing in on the signing of free agent Alen Halilović.

The 25-year-old, who is youngest ever debutant for the Croatian national team, has been without a club since he was released by Birmingham City at the end of last season.

It is now understood that the Royals are close to finalising a deal to sign the attacking midfield.

The length of the contract is not yet known.

Manager Veljko Paunovic has been an admirer of the former Barcelona midfielder throughout the summer but has been restricted in the market by financial constraints.

Should Halilovic sign, he will be the third new arrival of the summer, following Junior Hoilett and Tom Dele-Bashiru through the door.
