Here are our player ratings from Reading's 3-2 loss to Stoke City on the opening day of the Championship season.

Rafael  - 5

Erratic clearances and poor distribution all afternoon. Made some good stops and did well to hold onto them but wasted possession on more than one occasion. In his defence, couldn't do much about two of the goals but will have been frustrated to let one through his legs.

Andy Yiadom - 5

Keen to work the channels and try and get deliveries in from the right. Combined well with Azeez. Did, bewilderingly, take a long time to take throw-ins late on with Reading chasing.

Ethan Bristow - 5

Was hideously out of position for Stoke's third goal. Looked mostly assured before that, but ultimately a lack of focus from Bristow led to Stoke's winner.

Michael Morrison - 5

Produced a goal-saving block to deny Vrancic but may feel frustrated by the goals for City, Won his fair share of aerial battles but was guilty of giving Stoke a bit too much time on the ball near the Royals area. A touch flat-footed for Surridge's winner which took a deflection off of him, to make it work.

Liam Moore - 6

Scored a fantastic second for the Royals with a bullet header from a corner. Felt he could've done more to organize the defence for Stoke's set-pieces.

Tom McIntyre - 5

Showed versatility as he played both in the centre and to the left of defence. His positioning wasn't brilliant as he looked a little lost at moments.

John Swift - 8

A goal and an assist, not much else to say! Swift ran the show in the midfield helping Reading break quickly. A few disappointing set-pieces take the score down a smidge, but a brilliant opening day.

Andy Rinomhota - 6

A good showing from Rinomhota who covered every blade of grass on the pitch. Produced some nice touches to open space up in the midfield and was quick to support the attacks with good runs forward.

Josh Laurent - 5

Much in the same way as Rinomhota, Laurent provided half of the engine in the Royals midfield with a tireless display. Passing was quick but now always accurate.

Lucas Joao - 3

Didn't really get involved in the final third. Showed some nice touches to retain possession in transition but needed to make more of a mark in front of goal.

SUBS

George Puscas - 2

Did well to do even less than Lucas Joao. I spent the entirety of Puscas' cameo high in the stand in a press box and made as much of an impact on the game.

Dejan Tetek - 3

Very quiet after his introduction. Plenty of movement but didn't do anything to cause the hosts many problems.

Tom Holmes - 4

Came on late up front. I'm not sure why either. Gave it a good go but as you can imagine, looked out of position.
