OFSTED, or the Office for Standards in Education, inspects and rates all state schools across England to judge the quality of education pupils are receiving.

According to the latest ratings, there are currently five secondary schools in Reading have been rated as 'requires improvement' or ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted.

Here is a list of all the secondary schools that have been rated 'inadequate' or 'requiring improvement' in the Reading area.

Prospect School, Tilehurst - Requires Improvement

- Date of last inspection: May 5, 2021

After conducting an monitoring inspection while students were learning remotely, the Ofsted report said: "Over the past academic year, leaders have made a range of improvements to the education provided. The curriculum has been overhauled in each subject.

"Despite the COVID-19 challenges that the school has faced this year, leaders nonetheless pushed ahead with improvements in the autumn term."

Continuing, the inspector warned: "Leaders’ checks on impact and the tracking of pupils’ progress are not as sharp as they should be."

John Madejski Academy, Reading - Requires Improvement

- Date of last inspection: February 12, 2020

The Ofsted report reads: "The academy is improving because teachers’ expectations of pupils in all year groups are rising.

"Many pupils and parents agree that the school is better than in the past.

"Pupils feel safe and well supported. Pupils and staff get along well together and there is a friendly feeling to the school. Bullying does not happen very often. Pupils say they trust staff to deal with it if it does."

The inspector added however: "Currently, students do not have sufficient opportunities to experience the world of work. Leaders have plans to address this.

"The programme to support the development of sixth-form students’ wider skills is not meeting all their needs well enough."

The Vine Christian School, Three Mile Cross - Inadequate

- Date of last inspection: November 13, 2020

The Ofsted additional inspection said: "The previous inspection found that staff, including the designated safeguarding lead (DSL), were insufficiently familiar with safeguarding requirements and processes.

"The school’s safeguarding policy met requirements in terms of the areas it covered, but staff did not implement or understand the document.

"The school’s practices did not reflect what was set out in policy. Not all staff, including the DSL, had received sufficient training for their roles; consequently, they were unaware of their statutory duties.

"The DSL was not carrying out their role effectively. Record-keeping of safeguarding concerns was weak."

"Trustees have not kept a secure, strategic oversight of safeguarding.

"During this inspection, it became clear that the safeguarding audit they completed was too generous because stated actions and procedures have not become embedded practice."

Oakbank School, Ryeish Green - Requires Improvement

- Date of last inspection: February 25, 2020

Ofsted said: "Teachers increasingly encourage pupils to do their best.

"However, pupils do not achieve as well as they could because they have significant gaps in their knowledge and understanding.

"This is because, in the past, the curriculum has not been organised or planned well enough. Pupils believe that teaching and the curriculum are improving since the arrival of the new principal.

"Nevertheless, pupils still have a lot of catching up to do, particularly in key stage 4."

The Forest School, Winnersh - Requires Improvement

- Date of last inspection: May 6, 2021

Ofsted said in their latest remote monitoring inspection: "Leaders and those responsible for governance should take further action to improve the progress of the weakest readers and develop all pupils’ vocabulary range."

However, the report did credit the school by saying: "Leaders have been proactive in developing curriculum content over the past two years.

"This process has continued unabated during the partial closures of schools. The headteacher has been assiduous in the drive to improve the quality of education.

"She and the governors have appointed new middle leaders across the curriculum. They have also made a range of new appointments to the subject teams."
