A BUCKLEBURY man who attended Prince William’s wedding as a guest of bride Kate Middleton is appealing his conviction for fraud.

Hasmukh Shingadia, who used to count the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as customers of his convenience store in Upper Bucklebury, was given an eight-month suspended prison sentence back in 2011 after lying about the cash-in-hand money at his Post Office branch.

He used to welcome Prince William and Kate Middleton to his store -- which was near the latter’s family home -- as they would buy sweets from his shop when they were dating.

The 61-year-old was later invited to their April 2011 wedding.

But less than three months later the shopkeeper was sentenced for fraud at Oxford Crown Court.

Following his conviction for fraud by false representation Shingadia, of Long Grove, Upper Bucklebury, was ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £2,269.69 court costs.

He has applied for leave to appeal against his conviction and is set for a hearing at the Court of Appeal on Monday, July 19.
