LANDLORDS in Oxford are still refusing people who receive housing benefits, a community-based tenants union has said.

The local branch of ACORN staged another demonstration on Oxford High Street over the weekend, in a continued bid to draw attention to the housing market's 'discrimination' against renters on benefits.

Protestors gathered outside the city centre branch of Breckon & Breckon – another letting agent that the union suspects of using 'No DSS' tactics to avoid renting to people receiving Universal Credit or other housing related benefits, which has been ruled unlawful under the Equality Act 2010.

Last month, ACORN members also held a protest outside a branch of Chancellors estate agents.

Managing director of of Breckon & Breckon Greg Barnes commented on the accusation: "Our policy is clear – all tenants are treated equally and subject to the same standard referencing procedure and affordability checks.

"As a privately owned Oxford business, we take an active role in our local communities and have a number of DSS tenants.

"Acorn has not engaged with us, and we are not in receipt of any pledge."
