A MAN has been arrested after a white van was driven the wrong way on the M4 this morning.

Thames Valley Police said the white Vauxhall van was driven the wrong way on the three-lane motorway between 6.50am ad 7.20am (May 2).

It travelled west on the eastbound carriageway between junction 15 for Hungerford and junction 12 for Theale.

Police said the vehicle then joined the motorway in the correct direction before crashing into the central reservation.

A 51-year-old man, from Weymouth, was arrested at the scene and has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Investigating officer, PC Beth Drummond of that Roads Policing Unit based at Three Mile Cross, said: “This was a very serious incident of dangerous driving. I would like to appeal to anyone who witnessed it, especially anyone with dashcam footage to get in touch.
