An aparthotel in West Berkshire could soon make way for 40 affordable homes.

The company which runs the Flexistay Reading West Aparthotel has applied for planning permission to convert the building into a block of 20 flats and build a second block containing another 20 flats next to it.

During the pandemic, homeless people have been provided with temporary accommodation at the aparthotel in Bath Road, Padworrth.

The plans state: “The proposal is for a 100 per cent affordable housing scheme consisting of 40 new flats providing stability for low income or vulnerable families in the area.

“This will provide economic security and other benefits for those struggling to meet day to day needs due to high rental costs.”

According to the plans, there will be one, two and three bedroom flats, communal gardens and a total of 50 car parking spaces.

The plans state the flats will be spread over three floors but will be in “stacked modular blocks” that are “designed to look like a cluster of smaller buildings rather than one large building”.

If approved, the new homes will be rented out and maintained by the company RentPlus, which offers affordable leases that allow tenants to save for a deposit for a house.

West Berkshire Council is due to make a decision on the planning application in March.
