It’s been another busy week for developers who are working on ambitious projects for Reading.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, developers are submitting plans that promise to transform parts of the town each week.

Take a look at four of the most interesting planning applications that have been submitted this week.

36 extra flats by the River Kennet

Dukesbridge House, in Duke Street, is currently occupied by a Subway restaurant and offices. It was also home to nightclub Po Nah Nah until 2008.

In September 2020, developer Lipman Properties was granted planning permission to redevelop the building, which faces the River Kennet, and turn the offices into 77 flats.

Earlier this month, it applied for permission to alter the plans and extend the building, to create an extra 36 flats, a cafe, a gym, and shops.

Under the current plans, the one, two and three-bedroom flats would be spread over seven floors.

‘Urgent’ hospital roof repairs

Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has submitted plans to fix the leaking roof at the Old Library – a Grade II listed building that is used for lectures and meetings.

The plans state: “The current state of the roof is in urgent need of repair as it has begun to leak due to natural weathering and may damage the historic fabric. The proposal is to replace the Welsh slate and leadwork.

“The repair work will follow a complete like for like basis for all materials and accessories.

“This is to maintain the character of the building and avoid any changes or alterations in the buildings current nature.

“The interior will be surveyed once the leaks are repaired to check for any internal damage and repairs undertaken if required.”

Offices turned into eight flats

Singh Construction wants to covert offices at 62-66 Queens Road into eight flats.

Under the current plans, there will be four on the first floor and four more on the second.

That building is currently used as a centre for people who want to take a theory test to obtain a driving licence for a car, motorcycle or heavy goods vehicle.

Three new flats on Oxford Road

The building at 601 Oxford Road contains a hairdressers and flat on the ground floor and another flat on the first floor. The building has also been extended to provide a storage area.

But a developer wants to demolish that storage area and add a new two-storey extension, so it can turn two flats into three.

It says that once the redevelopment is finished, there will be two two-bedroom flats and one one-bedroom flat.
