A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl from Newbury is asking people to show their appreciation for teachers by displaying red apples in their windows.

During the first lockdown children drew rainbows to say thank you to the NHS.

Charlotte Kingston said her daughter Edie thought it would be a nice idea to draw a red apple (which has been a symbol for teachers for hundreds of years) to show her appreciation for teachers.

Charlotte explained teachers are working "around the clock to ensure schools are still open" for vulnerable children and children of front line workers "yet still have time to plan lessons every day for those learning from home".

Edie added: "I wanted to draw something for the teachers like the rainbows for the NHS.

"I like my teachers they make me laugh and I like playing with my friends at school, I miss them."

A JustGiving page has also been set up with the hopes of raising £1,000 for the charity Education Support which supports the mental health and wellbeing of education staff in schools, colleges and universities.

So far, it has raised £117.

A T-shirt has also been designed with a drawing of a red apple and the words 'thank you teachers' on the front and a large apple on the back.

The money made from the T-shirt sales will also be donated to Education Support.

Charlotte suggested children could wear a thank you teacher T-shirt, including ones made by children in lockdown, on the first day back at school to show their gratitude.
