A POPULAR coffee shop has reiterated the coronavirus safety measures it has in place following a customer complaint.

A customer who visited Costa in Caversham last weekend alleged there were "22 customers queuing in doors, less than a metre apart, some were even eating within the store".

The customer, who wanted to remain anonymous, slammed the shop for reportedly not enforcing social distancing rules and said they did not feel safe using the store again.

Responding to the claims a Costa spokesperson said: "The safety of our team members and customers is our number one priority.

"We are confident that the Costa Coffee store in Caversham, which is owned and operated by a franchise partner, has all the right Covid-secure measures in place to safely operate under current lockdown restrictions, which includes no in-store eating, which is why all seating has been removed."

The spokesperson continued to explain what safety measures have been put in place during the pandemic.

They added: "The enhanced safety and hygiene measures, including a one-way system, social distancing signage, teams wearing face masks, and Perspex screens, have been reviewed by both the local council and police.

"We are grateful to our customers in Caversham for following the guidelines, helping the store team safely serve them during a challenging time.”
