Plans to fix the foundations of a 149-year-old hospital building, extend a maternity unit and beauty salon, and construct six new flats in Reading have been submitted this week.

You can take a look at those plans in more detail below.

Fixing failures in foundations’ at Royal Berkshire Hospital building

Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has applied for permission to insert a heavy concrete stake, known as a bored pile, to underpin the foundations of the Old Maid’s building in London Road.

According to the plans, this will “remedy failures in foundations over many years”.

The Grade II listed building, that was constructed in the 1870s to provide accommodation for nurses, is currently vacant.

There are also plans to replace the sewer network as the existing pipework has collapsed.

The NHS trust says once it has underpinned the building, it will apply for permission to install a new roof and remove rotten timbers, so it can convert the building into an office block.

Extension of maternity unit at Royal Berkshire Hospital

The NHS trust also wants planning permission to remove a temporary prefabricated building on the ground floor of the maternity unit and replace it with a permanent extension.

It says the new building would be around 70 sqm and provide a changing room for female catering staff at the hospital. It would be fitted with lockers, showers and a toilet.

The planning application was submitted on December 15.

Six new flats in Tilehurst

I.E Architecture wants planning permission to add two storeys onto the three-storey building at 72 Admirals Court in Reading.

The plans say the extension will contain six one-bedroom flats, taking the total number of flats in the building to 10.

Beauty salon extension in Tilehurst

JK Nails & Beauty is looking to extend its beauty salon and nail bar.

The owner, who runs the salon from her house in School Road Tilehurst, has applied for planning permission to convert her dining room into a ‘beauty room’.

According to the plans, this will be linked to the existing salon and provide almost 10 sqm of additional space for the business.
