Two more Oxford Road shops face a ban on super-strength beer cider next week.

Anrish News and Today’s Express were banned from selling beer and cider above 6.5 per cent yesterday (Thursday, November 19).

And KB Superstores and Reading West Foods (formerly I&R Stores) are the next shops to face a review of their licence by Reading Borough Council (RBC) due to issues with street drinking and anti-social behaviour on Oxford Road and their failures to meet their licensing commitments.

KB Superstores is on 337-339 Oxford Road, while Reading West Foods is on 202 Oxford Road.

Thames Valley Police say both shops have failed to take due diligence and sufficiently promote the licensing objectives of public safety, preventing public nuisance and crime and disorder and protecting children from harm.

The stores are two of six which the police have asked for the council to review, with two already being slapped with a super-strength booze ban.

Oxford Road Safer Neighbourhood Forum chairman Peter Bowyer said the area has “chronic problems with anti-social and criminal behaviour by street drinkers” who gather near the two shops and buy alcohol, often funded by begging.

Mr Bowyer and RBC have supported a recommendation from Thames Valley Police, who asked for the licence review, to super-strength beer and cider sales.

While TVP have recommended this be reduced to 6 per cent, the council’s licensing committee is unlikely to hand out restrictions lower than the 6.5 per cent limit given to Anrish News and Today’s Express.
