A TEENAGE boy who travelled to Mexico for cancer treatment has since returned home to Emmer Green but has been suffering with mobility problems.

Charlie Ilsley, 13, from Emmer Green was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, the most high-grade brain tumour found in children when he was eight years old.

He has undergone countless operations and even more hospital trips since to help rid him of this cancer.

Charlie flew to Mexico for potentially life-saving treatment in June this year but a follow up scan showed a “small progression” in Charlie’s spine and a little area in the back of his head.

He returned to Mexico with Toni and dad Mark recently.

It was here where he underwent more treatment including Immunotherapy which was injected straight into his spine.

The family returned home to England on October 31.

Toni said Charlie is “ok” but he had “weakness in his legs and he couldn’t walk”.

She explained Charlie’s consultant at the John Radcliffe Hospital wanted to check him over and do a scan.

The results highlighted Charlie has “loads of inflammation” on his spine.

However Toni said “that’s how immunotherapy works”.

She added: “But because Charlie’s cancer is on the spine we have to be careful it doesn’t do permanent damage so he was prescribed steroids to manage it.”

Charlie has since been “feeling much better” and managed to get down the stairs.

Toni said they are planning to go back to Mexico for a few days in the first week of December.

This is for a follow up scan and to speak with Charlie’s doctor there.

Toni has released a book about the family’s journey with Charlie since his cancer diagnosis in 2015.

Toni said: “It’s called ‘Never Give Up’ because we never will.”
